Swedish (Relaxation) Massage This is the style of massage most people think of when they think of massage. The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones. Swedish massage increases the flow of oxygen rich blood to the muscles and assists in the removal of waste products and toxins from the muscle tissue as well as reducing physical and mental tension from the entire body. Swedish massage can help to speed up recovery from injury, improve circulation, reduce blood pressure, improve sleep and increase flexibility and muscle tone. Australian Thermal Stone Massage You have seen those lucky people on Travel Shows on TV at day spas around the world in a state of pure bliss with hot stones sinking into their muscles draining away all of tension in their body. This experience is now available to you in the middle of Hobart. The warmth of the stones increases blood flow to your muscles increasing the flexibility of your muscles while relaxing and detoxifying the surrounding tissue. Where Therapies such at Swedish Massage and Hot Stone Massage have a large number of general health benefits and play a great role in preventing a broad range of problems as well as improving overall wellbeing, Remedial Massage techniques address specific issues when a problem has occurred. Trigger Point Therapy Trigger points are small areas of compressed tissue around the point where the motor nerve enters a muscle. The founders of trigger point therapy describe these areas as points of “exquisite tenderness”. (You will understand this when a therapists applied pressure to a trigger point). Trigger point therapy is also called myofascial trigger point therapy. Trigger points, when active, refer pain to other areas of the body and are often the cause of many peoples long term aches and pains. Fortunately trigger points cause these pains in predictable patterns and a therapist can (with the help of charts) determine where the trigger points are based on the pain you are experiencing and through working these trigger point relieve your pain. Muscle Energy Technique (MET) MET is a technique use to improve the range of motion in any restricted joint in the body using two neuromuscular phenomena known as PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) and Reciprocal Inhibition. While these terms sound complex, the practice when conducted by a trained therapist is moderately simple and produces significant results. A session involving MET will begin with an assessment of the alignment of the body or the area of the body in question to determine the extent of the imbalance and to provide a baseline to determine the degree of improvement during the treatment. Further assessment will occur throughout a treatment. During a treatment the client will be asked to pull or push against the therapist to contact various muscles in their body and then relax. This process causes the brain to send messages to the muscles in question to cause the muscles to lengthen allowing greater range of movement. Deep Tissue Massage Deep Tissue massage, as the name suggests, involves working a lot deeper into the body than other forms of massage. The therapist will apply a great deal more pressure to various areas of muscle in order to separate muscle fibres that have become stuck together, through injury, over use or prolonged habitual muscle tension. When muscle fibres are adhered, or stuck together blood flow is restricted reducing the supply of oxygen to the muscle and inhibiting the removal or waste products and toxins, causing the muscle to operate less efficiently causing poor performance, more stiffness and some lethargy. While deep tissue therapy can cause some discomfort during and immediately after treatment, clients usually experience feeling lighter more flexible and much better than they did before treatment. Deep tissue Massage helps to break up scar tissue within muscles and on the surface of the skin, removing or minimising visible scaring improving the flexibility of the skin and fascia as well as the muscle. Lymphatic Drainage The Lymphatic System is a series of vessels in the body that is used to clear the body of cellular waste products, toxins and excess fluid. It is effectively part of the body’s exhaust system. Unfortunately the lymphatic system can be compromised through injury, illness, lack of mobility, poor diet or inadequate water intake and can become congested either throughout the whole body of just in specific areas. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (or MLD) involves the therapist using very slow strokes and pumping movements along the pathways of the lymph vessels in a specific sequence to help clear the lymphatic system and get it working again. Many people with congested lymphatic vessels will feel that that are carrying weight that they just cannot seem to lose, they feel lethargic and often have a slightly “puffy” appearance in various areas of their body. They may also have a tendency to have mild cold and flu symptoms quite often. MLD can quite rapidly help to process this excess fluid leaving the person feeling more energetic, and having a far greater sense of wellbeing as well as boosting immune function and clearing a lot of retained fluid and the associated weight of that fluid. MLD is also an effective treatment for oedema and an effective adjunct in the treatment of the more serious lymph oedema. Sports Massage Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries. The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. The massage will help prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries. Sports massage can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether a person is an athlete or a once a week jogger. Each type of sport has different demands on the players. Each sport uses muscle groups in a different way. Sports massage is designed to address those specific concerns and may differ according to the sport the athlete plays. Sports massage can be aimed to help heal strained muscles and allow healthy ones to reach peak performance and maintain it while minimizing the risk of injury. Sports massage has many benefits. In addition to FEELING GOOD, it reduces the heart rate and blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, reduces muscle tension, improves flexibility, and relieves pain. Each sport and athletic event uses muscle groups in a different way. Sports Massage can also include pre-event, post-event and maintenance techniques that promote greater athletic endurance and performance, lessen chances of injury and reduce recovery time. Pregnancy Massage During pregnancy, an expectant mother’s body is constantly changing shape and size. This means that all of the muscles that hold her upright when she is standing have to work differently to how they used to and this will change on a daily basis. Other muscles and skin tissue will stretch and move in uncomfortable ways too. If you are pregnant, chances are nothing written so far will be news to you and neither will this. It can all be a bit uncomfortable. A pregnancy massage on a special mat that allows you to lie comfortably on your stomach will help your body adjust to the changes it is going through. It will ease those aches and pains. It will reduce the occurrence of stretch marks. It will assist with sleep. If you are going to be a Mum you deserve to be pampered. You deserve a massage from a trained professional. If you are going to be a Dad you should be organising this for the soon-to-be Mum.
